A Better Chance (ABC) is a national program that recruits academically promising and motivated students of color from urban areas and places them in high schools that nurture their talent. ABC in Darien has 8 young female scholars that, during the school year, live in the ABC house on Tokeneke Rd. with Resident Directors, and attend Darien High School. All of our graduates go on to competitive four-year colleges including MIT, Amherst, Syracuse, George Washington University, UVA, UNC, Franklin and Marshall and Cornell, among many others.
The ABC Board is currently seeking community volunteers to serve on its Board. A desire to help promising young women pursue their dreams and a willingness to jump in and help with committee responsibilities are all that’s required. Committees include finance, fundraising, public relations, selection, grant writing, administration, transportation, enrichment, college counseling, and summer study abroad, among others. Have another talent that you think would be helpful? Please let us know!
We are also looking for host families for our two incoming freshman in August. We match each scholar with a host family in Darien who hosts that student one weekend per month in their home. Ideally, the host family has another child at DHS, preferably a freshman or sophomore. Very special and long-time bonds form! It takes a village! Please join us!
